life on a lake

Over the weekend I had a college reunion/get together type thing with some of my college roommates. A few were missing from the epic house we all lived in, but it was predictably awesome to reminisce, swap adult-life stories, and act a fool.

"What is one to say about June, that time of perfect young summer,
the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months,
and with as yet no sign to remind one that
its fresh young beauty will ever fade."

-Gertrude Jekyll

I came across this quote in an old blog post....while July and August are the wonderful dog days of summer, and this June has been unseasonably cold, I'm always a little sad at the end of June...means summer is moving too fast.

lately

I don't know where June has gone. Two weeks of chilly, cold, wet weather sort of made everyone hole up; now it's like people are coming out from the woodwork. I've been doing everything but blogging: making salsa verde for chicken enchiladas (and general consumption), drinking lots of smoothies, and trying to sneak out with the camera when the sun decides to come out.

Nerd Alert

This is exciting. Super, super exciting.

From the CS Monitor:

“I’m thrilled to say I’m now in a position to give you something unique: an online reading experience unlike any other. It’s called Pottermore,” Rowling said in her YouTube announcement. “Pottermore will be where fans of any age can share, participate in, and rediscover stories…. I’ll be joining in, too, because I’ll be sharing additional information I’ve been hoarding for years about the world of Harry Potter.”

Fans of all ages will be able to enter a virtual world they’ve been imagining for years. In the online Potter universe, readers will choose a magical username, be sorted into a Hogwarts house just as Harry was in the books, choose wands, experience life at Hogwarts, and journey through Harry’s adventures as they play games, cast spells, mix potions, and collect points. For now, the website will be limited to the first Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone.”

The part muggles will go mad for? The as-yet unpublished extra material Rowling will share about the people, places, and plots she’s created. And there’s a lot of it. “[T]he fresh Potter background from the author already stretches to 18,000 words, with more to come,” reported The Guardian, which attended Rowling’s London press conference Thursday morning.

verano

Okay. So let me tell you about the chaos that was my life this spring. First of all, the cicadas. These strange, locust-like, enormous insects are common throughout the South. They don’t seem to do much other than make a faint buzzing sound which is sort of like a soundtrack to hot, hazy days of summer in Missouri. Seeing as I spend most of my summer out of Missouri, I have no hard feelings towards these little buggers. However, every 13 years, there are these epic cicadas that come into being…they actually live underground for 13 years, come out to mate (buzzing = mating call), and then they die, leaving their carcasses everywhere. This was lucky #13 for these cicadas, and they seemed to come out of nowhere at the end of May. All of the sudden I would be walking around and see them covering the trunk of a tree, or my car, or flying around…and they aren’t harmful or poisonous, but they do love to fly up and land on you, sending you into the “I’ve been bugged” dance. You know you laugh when you see others doing it, but then it happens to you and you feel like an idiot. And the buzzing, worst at mid-afternoon, was like a million lawn mowers going off for hours.
So then there were the swallows. Beautiful birds, but not when they build a nest right above your front door and dive bomb you everytime you try to go in and out.

And then, the deer. Bambo, if you will. Last year, there was an aggressive mama that laid a fawn near the apartments where I leave. She was unusually protective, tracking and stalking dogs well over a half mile from where she was when they were being walked, even if they weren’t going near her fawn. If I came out of my door, she was there. You were lucky if she didn’t charge the dog. She would follow you, and it got so bad that state conservation officers had to come out and try to trap her. Eventually she ended up killing a small dog, and the deer was put down. Imagine my distress this spring when another deer showed up, doing the same things. It got so that I had to put my dog in the car 3 times a day and drive her somewhere else to walk safely. Not fun.

Then of course, the storms and tornado warnings were relentless in May. And to put the cherry on top, we had a small earthquake a few nights before I was to leave. I woke up around 3am one morning and felt shaking – at first it felt like thunder or a train going by the window. Then I realized that it could be an earthquake – and I promptly went back to sleep. In the morning the news confirmed it – it was about a 4.0 some 120 miles away. At the time I thought I was maybe dreaming so it wasn’t scary, but any bigger and I think I would have been freaked.

So needless to say, I’m happy to be out of that and into this for the rest of the summer. Cool nights, lakeside sunsets, bonfires, and beach days await.

hey dere....

This was the main event a couple of weeks ago...baby bro is finally done.

I think I need to part my hair on the other side...hmm

Lots of these all day long

And a preceding two days full of concerts, awards, presentations, banquets....etc

And a lot of cute niece time.

After all the hullaballoo, I had to stay an extra week in these insane, biblical, apocalyptic-like nature conditions in Saint Louis for a conference, meetings, and some other stuff. More on that later.

in which i become a terrible blogger

This weekend one of my best girls Molly was in town for two days....we went to Forest Park and paddleboated around, satisfied our craving for cheap tacos, watched and awed over Oprah's last 2 episodes, and re-watched and analyzed all the Will & Kate stuff I had DVRed. We also drank these amazing smoothies (I left out the ice, so they were a little richer). I'm spending the rest of this weekend doing report cards....I have 2 half days of school left, then my whole family will be in town for my little brother's high school graduation from Thursday to Sunday. Blogging, while so fun at the beginning of summer, will be an afterthought for the beginning of June. Happy Memorial Day and happy summer!

oooh oooh

whyyyy

I always run out of non-food grocery items at the same time. Foil, detergent, toothpaste, lotion.....it's enough to blow through the whole week's budget. Grr....I need to become one of those crazy extreme couponers and have a stockpile of supplies in my pantry.

you can take the girl out of jersey...

Fun Fact: My mother's family came to New Jersey in the 1670s. My mother is a ninth-generation Jersey Girl, and my siblings and I would have been 10th generation had my parents started out there. My mom spent her summers at the Jersey Shore, and we cringe whenever she mentions that to others. Their summers were quaint refreshing seaside times, rather than....yeah. While she was here I forced her to watch Real Housewives of New Jersey with me, so she could "see what's being put out there" (aka: I could get my guilty pleasure fix). The hair terrified her.

re-cap.

Spring is the eternally busy season....my mom just left after a 5 day visit, coming down for a business meeting, my little brother's 18th birthday, and his senior class banquet. I spent the last week and half frantically organzing a guest list of 20 seniors via facebook messages..although I don't love facebook, it was super useful for contacting people. I love when my mom comes because she does things like revive 3 dead plants I have (I really don't like caring for plants...I have a total black thumb), fill my fridge with groceries, and remove stuborn stains from the bathtub.

Of course for the party decor we had to go to Party City, one of my kitschiest happy places. My brother is now in Hawaii for a week studying Pearl Harbor for his senior project, hence the cheesy but amazing Hawaiian theme.

Wahooo!!!

St. Louis is featured today with a City Guide on Design*Sponge!!

I've lived in St. Louis for almost 3 years now. I was super hesitant to leave my home state and only came for a fantastic job offer that wasn't available in a struggling economy in Michigan. It took a little while, as it does with any new place, but I was just thinking the other day how I feel like I can call St. Louis home. So glad to see this amazing city guide today - some of these places I've explored, but many I haven't - this should keep me busy for awhile!
